The network builder, which can be engaged on so-called greenfields projects, said in a statement that it “will roll out 17 kilometres of new fibre throughout the Appin community”.

The community is being developed by Walker Corporation. It was fast-tracked by the NSW government but has been controversial owing to size of the development and the lack of existing infrastructure in the area.

NBN Co said it had signed “a multi-million-dollar partnership” with Walker Corporation to deploy fibre to the area.

It also intends to deploy smart community infrastructure extensions, which could mean “ambient wi-fi is [made] available in public areas such as community centres and adventure playgrounds.”

The smart community product, known as Smart Places, is promoted by NBN Co as a way of connecting other infrastructure such as charging stations, utility poles and CCTV cameras, among other assets.
