Hume formerly spent five years as CIO at the former NSW Department of Family and Community Services, where he closed a $54 million deal with SAP to migrate the agency to a cloud-based ERP.

He left the department in 2017 to set up his own consulting business.

Hume also has previous IT leadership experience from stints at NSW Health, Qantas, The Wine Society, and as inaugural chair of the NSW Public Sector Community of ICT Professionals.

“I’m delighted to welcome Tim into the role of CIO,” Macquarie University’s vice-president of people and services, Nicole Gower, said in a statement.

“His experience and insight will be highly valuable as we continue the transformation of our technology platforms and the digital experience for students, staff and members of our University community.”

Hume added that during his time as interim CIO, he was “very impressed at the level of collaboration and dedication shown by everyone involved in IT transformation at Macquarie”.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to help plan, govern, and deliver transformation across the university’s services, systems and processes as it continues to excel in the delivery of an outstanding curriculum and ground-breaking research.”

Hume replaces David Reeve, who left the university after two years to become CIO at ASX-listed Metcash earlier this year.

At the time of Reeve's departure, university services and strategy vice-president, Saveria Dimasi, said that Reeve "led the way for some transformational IT projects" during a "very busy time" at Macquarie.

“These included the successful implementation of the research system, the upgrading of the student and finance systems and planning for a new HR system.”

Hume commences as Macquarie University's permanent CIO on Friday 1 November.
